Pie Chart to Show Quarters

A traditional way to teach fractions is to give students a picture of a pizza and have them divide it up into equal parts. A pie chart is a graphic organizer that works in the same way as a pizza picture. It can be used to help students show and understand fractions. The chart forms a circle which can be divided into equal parts. By coloring the chart using different colors, students begin to see the pieces as equal parts of the whole. In the Quarters Pie Chart, the chart is divided into four equal parts. Students decide how to color each part. They then write the fractions for the amount of the pie chart that is green and the amount that is purple. In this way, students gain experience with making fractional pictures and writing the fractions they represent.
