The Letter H
The Letter H
H is the eighth letter of the alphabet. On a frequency count of the most used letters, H comes up ninth, so it’s an important letter to know. Letter games are a great way to learn to identify the letter H and other letters of the alphabet. As students begin to learn to read, they will learn Dolch sight words along with the words they’re learning through phonics practice. Some Dolch sight words that begin with H include help, here, have, and he. The letter H is also found in the “th” blend. In language arts, students will quickly learn this letter combination to help them read and write the words they’re used to saying. Part of learning the letters is learning to write each one. H is a tall letter in both its forms. Even the lowercase form reaches all the way to the top line. Children can practice this best with handwriting paper that includes solid top and bottom rules and a dotted center rule. This way, students can make sure that the vertical lines of their Hs reach to the very top. They can also place the capital H’s bar and the lowercase H’s curve in the right spot. With plenty of practice and triple-ruled paper at the beginning, students will soon be able to use standard lined paper for writing the letter H.
