2nd Grade Math

Second grade math involves many different areas of mathematics. Children will learn about number sense, money, data and probability, and algebra. They’ll also explore measurement, geometry, fractions, and time.

When it comes to number sense, place value will be used more and more. The focus will be on counting and grouping. Students will also be able to give the value of a digit in a larger number and they’ll learn to use zero as a placeholder. In the area of money, they’ll need to be able to identify and count pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and half dollars. Children at this level also need to understand that coins represent a value. In algebra, they’ll be asked to study and extend patterns. This includes lists of numbers that show repeated addition or subtraction. Odd and even numbers are referred to more often and students will use them in relation to patterns. Data and probability are also important in second grade math. Students will need to compare data by using charts and graphs. They’ll be introduced to the terms range, median, and mode and will be asked to interpret the data and make predictions. Students will learn and apply basic probability concepts. They’ll use vocabulary like possible, certain, and impossible.

In measurement, students will practice measuring length by using tools like rulers and tape measures. They’ll measure to the nearest inch, foot, and yard and will also be introduced to the metric system. Students will learn to classify, describe, and measure the weight of various objects as they use second grade math vocabulary terms like lighter and heavier. In geometry, students will learn to identify the characteristics of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. More vocabulary will also be introduced. Fractions will involve determining equal parts of a whole or of a group. When it comes to time, students will learn to tell time to the nearest half and quarter hour. They’ll also learn more about units of time, such as minutes, hours, days, and months.

Playing online games can help bring math for kids to a fun level. Several online sites offer lessons, games and math printable worksheets to help students learn math and make it fun.
