Gimme Five

Gimme Five is a graphic organizer in which students make lists of words that relate to a word they are studying. Each list of five words has a rule. Students make a list of five words that have the same beginning letter as the word they are studying. They make a list of five words that have the same ending letter as the word they are studying. Continuing at the bottom of the organizer, students list five words that have the same number of letters as the main word. Finally, students list five words with the same vowel sound as the main word. Gimme Five is a great activity to help students improve their reading skills. It helps build word recognition by having students find and list words that look similar to the word they are studying. It helps build reading skills by requiring students to look closely at the similarities and differences in each word. Gimme five helps build phonics skills as students identify the same vowel sound in six different words. Students compare and contrast the different words as they build their lists, helping them learn about all the words, not just the word they’re studying.
